'Innumerable Counts' consists of countless numbers arranged in a random order, with one notable absence: the number zero is left as blank. Each number represents a countdown from 9 to 1, following the logic of LED numbers used in other works. The blank spaces indicate where the count reaches zero.
The work captures a frozen moment in time where countless numbers are each individually counting down. These innumerable numbers represent Seimei (生命/life), with each digit serving as a snapshot of an individual life’s expression—including its moments of absence. Together, they represent a collective of infinite lives.
Because works of this series can be created by people other than Miyajima himself, they offer a broader perspective on the interconnectedness of the collective Seimei. For these pieces, Miyajima provides the list of random numbers, which participants then draw onto the surface.
In this site-specific installation, three black wooden panels were completed by three students from Asia University in Taichung, each using a different metallic marker: silver, copper, and gold.
